Brief History

York was founded in 71 AD by the Romans and became its capital in northern Europe. It developed into an important wool trading point in the middle ages and sustained in becoming a processing and railway hub in the 19th century. The railway system was developed and introduced countless work opportunities for the locals via businesses that prospered in the city. By 1996, York evolved into a unitary authority area. It had been awarded the European Tourism City of the Year in 2007. It can be attested by the number of annual guests at different hotels in York .

Education

There are a couple of well-known York universities, which are the University of York and the recently conferred York St. John University. The more renowned, the University of York was established in 1963 which holds over 30 departments in eight colleges, that offer different degrees. The institution is relatively young but it slowly climbed its way to being in the top 90 universities in the world. In 2010, it was given the “University of the Year” award by theTimes Higher Education.

Tourism

York has a lot to offer with its mix of ancient structures and modern scenes. One can walk by the old Roman city wall or the streets made of cobblestones. You can also eat and drink beside the river plus a number of cafes and bistros in a vibrant atmosphere. Check out the Gothic cathedral, York Minster and get impressed by its sophisticated architecture. The world’s largest collections of railway items are displayed at the National Railway Museum. You can also visit the Jorvik Viking Center that will take you back to a lifestyle 1000 years ago. All these and more are located within a city of various finds and discoveries.
