The chances are that the heating oil in your tank did not originate from the UK. It came from another country altogether. It could have come from places as far away as Saudi Arabia or other exotic places. In actual fact we depend greatly on our foreign sources of oil and only twenty percent of the oil we use actually comes from the UK. The result of this dependence is that the price we pay for our heating oil can be very high and we are totally at the mercy of these foreign oil suppliers. We are told that there is still about 20 billion barrels of oil in UK waters; this is a lot and sure to reduce our dependence on foreign sources. And if we began to utilise this oil it might help to bring down costs and satisfy most of us for the rest of our lives. But there are disadvantages too such as the fact that if we use it, there won’t be much left for our descendants and we all know the dangers of drilling for oil in the water. It would be disastrous for all of us if we were to experience the same kind of oil spill that just happened in the Gulf of Mexico.

 

So even though there is oil down there, it is not really the best time to start drilling for it. It would be nice though if we could use a bit more of what we have while prices are so high. Last winter saw many people struggling to pay for heating oil; in some parts of the country pensioners were forced to choose between oil and food. We do not seem to be fulfilling our own needs at the moment especially if last winter was anything to go by so we really need to be able to strike a balance between meeting our current needs and keeping enough oil on reserve for our descendants.
