I know many of you think that a dishwasher is a modern household appliance, but the truth is that a first dish washing machine was created in 1886 by Josephine Cochran. The maid of this wealthy middle calls woman was a clumsy woman that would often break or crack the finest china tea sets in the house. Josephine designed a machine that would wash the dishes effectively without damaging the pots in the process.

However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that the dishwasher became a household kitchen appliance. Before that period, there were none of them in the houses and only restaurants and large catering companies used dishwashers.

There is a long and succefull way dishwashers have come through since 1886, but we except they will be so much more then just machines to clean our dirty dishes without breaking them.

How do you choose a suitable dishwasher for your needs?

First and foremost, the size of your family will influence your choice. If you have a family up to three members, then a small dishwasher of 18″ should be enough, but in case you have more family members, a 24″ dishwasher will be just enough to do the job.

The next thing you should think about is the type of the dish washing machine that would suit you best. Maybe you have a white kitchen appliances and want to hide them together with your new kitchen, you can do this by buying a built in dish washing machine.

Since the dishwashers are made in different size, you should take a measurements of the space where you plan to put your new dishwasher in, just to make sure it all fits well. You should know that this little thing may have quite an impact on what you choose. You should probably go for a portable dishwasher if your kitchen is quite small or you do not have several memebrs of family living with you.

With global warming and rising energy costs in the forefront of everyone’s minds, energy saving dishwashers are obviously desirable. The greenest machines you can find are graded A, which means they are appliances with good energy efficiency. Always buy the most Eco-friendly machine you can afford.
