Garage Sales Can Be Very Addictive
If people were being truthful with themselves and the matter of garage sales, almost each and every one of them would admit to everybody that garage sales can be very addictive, whether holding one or going out in search of dozens of them on a Saturday or Sunday morning (or both). It’s a way of finding not only what’s needed but also, more importantly, what’s wanted.
There’s a big difference between needing and wanting something, and garage sales are superb at helping people address that second part (wanting). Consider that almost nobody who’s not in a rock band needs an Ibanez electric guitar, but it’s a fact that almost every man or boy at one time or another has wanted something like that guitar, if only to stand in front of the mirror and preen while pretending to play.
After all, it’s usually the case that the only difference between men and boys are the cost of the toys that they spend money on to accumulate and then never use. Consider that most men have also dreamed of being an Olympic downhill skier. And to prove it, go check the basement for all the alpine skiing equipment that they went out and bought at a garage sale the year before.
Most men — and their significant others — would say, though, that there’s nothing wrong with this because these men are at least getting out there and getting a bit of exercise finding a garage sale, at minimum. And this can be far better than sitting out on a lawn with a beer and a garden hose used to water the lawn. This alone makes the money spent on that skiing equipment worth it, some might say.
And that’s where the beauty of the garage sale seems to be strongest; one can be held or one can be searched for almost at will and especially during the long, hot summer months. And the greatest thing about them is that their almost doesn’t have to be a reason to hold one or visit one. If one needs to make some money, by all means hold one and then sell off that skiing equipment, if it helps.
The winter months also don’t need to be an impediment to garage sales. Open the garage, plug-in a portable space heater and set up a few tables and you’re on your way. And it’s even better in the winter when you’re out looking for other garages holding a bunch of junk from other people. Driving around all day on Saturday and Sunday seems to attract many people, for some reason.
Probably, there are professors of sociology and anthropology at major universities right now crafting grant requests so that they can study the phenomenon of the garage sale and how it has completely taken over this country. And while they may look at it academically they’ve probably also never experienced the sheer joy of finding that old record album at a garage sale that was put out by that Greek guy who plays the Pan flute, now have they?
