Should you go out and travel, do you want a place that is as pure as it was back in the day? In their search for somewhere untouched by tourists, most people will go as far as to both ends of the earth to find it. Coming from New Zealand and South America, the sightseers will be meeting in the ice laden Antarctic continent. To get a closer look on antarctica tours visit this site.

Founded in 1820 was this continent where only a few sealers, explorers, and scientists have been to. Image a location that is a size of the United States and Mexico combined but only a few places can be traversed due to the 7,000 foot thick ice blanket. Other than having to sail the stormiest seas, they too have to be in ships that can withstand the impact from ice to get there. Temperatures rarely go above freezing and there are always 24 hours of sunlight there.

Being the first visitors on the south of the Antarctic Circle and 2,000 miles south of and New Zealand in the Mcmurdo Sound area were the 14 men and 12 women. 800 sailors and scientists are part of the US Navy facility that is now located in this area which brought untold hardship and death to British explorers long ago. While the Northern Hemisphere experiences winter, it is summer south of the equator, and vice versa.

In 1957 was when two airline stewardesses were the only women able to visit here after a brief landing. Although some of the Navymen at McMurdo Station had not seen women for a year, the greeting they gave the stewardesses was less than enthusiastic. Without any women for a year the sailors have learned to adapt and they did not want this to break the efforts they could boast about later. People at McMurdo are also not excited over the idea of having tourists come in January and February. For the civilian technicians, scientists, and sailors, they are here because they have been chosen to perform special assignments in this continent. They see it as the adventure in Antarctica being lost with the coming of tourists. This kind of trip means extra services of drinks, tips, laundry, and seasick pills that can be obtained other than the warm pants, kodachrome, mittens, and red parka supplied by the travel service.

It was in 1955 where the only people inhabiting Antarctica were US Navy personnel and American scientists. There are nine nations also maintaining their own scientific stations on the continent and nearby islands. How will the Navy see the tourists’ arrival? According to the commander of naval forces in Antarctica, no territorial claim means that they cannot make restrictions on the people arriving here. But it can say under what circumstances people can visit our stations.

The visitors must be entirely self supporting. They are rid of such a problem with a well equipped ship. Protection comes with certain safety precautions taken. Safety for passengers is taken seriously by the travel agency as seen in their operational plan.

Everything from having some drinks at the enlisted clubs here, visit the ship’s store and post exchange, or attend services at the Chapel of the Snows can be done by a visitor after seeing the first nuclear power reactor in Antarctica. There are quite a number of conservationists, hikers, and avid bird watchers on the group, so from the expedition to go see seals, skua gulls, and killer whales they might be on the move to penguin rookeries someplace or even the huts left by early explorers.
